Southwest Town, Gustave A. Larson Company and Bohn Team Up to Cool 150,000 Pounds of Fruit Cups per Day

September 2002 - Chicagoland HVAC Insider

Pat Capella, Project Manager for Southwest Town Mechanical was faced with a difficult challenge from Madison Warehouse in Joliet. Madison stores the bulk of the Midwest distribution for Dole Pineapple fruit cups which must be cooled at the 50 degree level year round. "Our biggest concern was to come up with a refrigeration scheme that would give us consistent, even temperature throughout the 34,000 sq. ft. warehouse and allow for access through several aisles of product", says Pat.

Teaming up with Gary Nelson of Gustave A. Larson Company, South Holland branch, and Dave Lindahl, Bohn Senior Sales Engineer, Southwest Town recommended 4 BBV Series Condensing units to provide 76 tons of refrigeration at 35 degree suction temperature. The condensers were lined up with 8 evaporators that were positioned back to back in each aisle to provide a consistent throw of cooled air. Dave Lindahl ran all the loads and specified the system. According to Dave, "We went with the multiple systems for simplicity of install and service. Each unit is controlled by an individual thermostat so we provided systems that run independently to provide cooling only as needed. The units were also configured with the Bohnmizer energy savings head pressure control system which adjusts automatically to outside ambient and provide the ideal flow of refrigerant. The Bohnmizer control offers design simplicity, and has proven to be one of our most dependable, proven technologies. It was an ideal match for the Madison Project.

Gerry Grilec, Vice President of Southwest Town coordinated the helicopter lift and setting of the units. "By working closely with Gary Nelson of Gustave A. Larson, we were able to plan the staging of equipment in Madison parking lot until the day of the lift. At the time of the lift all the evaporators had been installed and piping through the roof had been accomplished. The condensers were set within 30 minutes which reduced our expense for the lift and provided our customer with an efficient, cost effective install", says Gerry.
